Size
The Joovy Kooper X2 double stroller is a side-by side double stroller. It can hold two children who weigh up to 50 lbs. The seats are larger than other lightweight double strollers and the canopies feature large SPF 50 sunshades that have peekaboo windows. Other important features include cup holders for one parent and a large, self-standing bin that can hold up to 25 lbs; swing-away bars for kids to get in and out of their seats and the wheels can be locked with swivels to allow for better maneuverability on rough terrain. It is a great choice for urban and suburban families. It is also newborn-ready with two sets that include an infant wedgie that can be used to lie flat in a position.
Weight
The weight of a double buggy is among the most important factors that determine its ease to push. A lighter buggy is simpler to lift and carry but may not have enough suspension to withstand bumps and uneven terrain.
Most double buggies come with a maximum weight per seat and some have total frame limits and it's important to check the details of each model before you purchase. Some double buggies can be folded with the seats removed, making them lighter and more compact. This is helpful when you're limited on storage space.
The tri-fold doubles are typically the lightest of models since only one hand is required to lift the front and back sections. They are also narrower than side by side buggies and are able to fit through most doorways. The iCandy Geo 3 tri-fold double is one of lighter models available. It can comfortably fit twins or a toddler baby.
Tandem buggies are perfect for families that are growing because they start as a single stroller but can be modified to include a second child, car seat or carrycot. Some, such as the iCandy Orange offer over 30 different seating configurations, so they can expand with your family, as high as a 3rd child. Doubles are heavier than trifolds, however, because the weight is more evenly dispersed, they are more comfortable to maneuver.
Folding
The most compact double buggies fold up easily in a matter of minutes. Our Lab experts appreciate this feature because it lets them to fit the buggies in the back of their vehicles and also save storage space when they are not in use. The Joovy Kooper X2 for example has straps that can be pulled up on each seat and the whole thing folds down. Even our most experienced testers were able to do this tri-fold with just one hand.
The lightweight Delta Children LX side by side is another great choice for a double buggie. Its lightweight weight is a plus however, so are its key features: nice-sized pop-out canopies with SPF 50 and peekaboo windows; swing-away bars that help children climb in and out of the seats and reclined seats and leg rests for smaller kids.
Manoeuvrability
One of the most important things to consider when choosing a compact double buggy is its manoeuvrability especially how it is easy to move around with both children in the. Certain pushchairs, like the iCandy Orange with its 'cinema seating' (where the back seat is elevated) are better than others.
Buggies with narrow tandems can be effective in this regard as can side-byside designs. However, they can be more substantial overall and so may be tricky to maneuver through doorways.
The UPPAbaby Vista 2 is an excellent example of this as it's a relatively narrow pushchair that still allows for two seats to be added as well as - importantly - an 'piggyback'-style board that can be used to carry an additional child.
Other smaller, three-wheeled models such as the phil&teds Dot are also incredibly agile, especially thanks to its clever 'dot kit' that turns into an inline buggy. It has two different seating arrangements for children of different age groups and the front seat can be turned so that it faces parents for a more intimate bonding experience. It comes with an ample storage basket and is easy to fold. It is an excellent choice for growing families!
